Working on a little personal development project. Not sure what it is yet, but I’m challenging myself to develop artwork for a sci-fi/horror WW2 era salvage team who pick up something too big to resist on sonar and head down to investigate. So basically, Aliens + The Abyss + Sphere + WW2 tech. I’ll be adding to this page as I create artwork.
Production Designer + Art Director | Netflix /Jam Filled | 2021
These designs are from an animated feature that is still in development at Netflix Animation. Please do not save or share art.
I worked in various stages of development, pre-production, and production on this film for two years. I joined in the summer of 2022 as the Art Director of Taika Waititi’s Limited Event Series and took the role of Production Designer in the spring of 2024 when the project was reimagined as a Feature Film.
It has been my responsibility to lead a team of artists to work on developing & maintaining a consistent style for the tone of this film, which I established alongside my Directors to serve their story. The project is currently still in development and the below artwork is a collection of various pieces of art which I created for the film. As you scroll down, I’ve organized the art from the latest version of the film through to the oldest. The style had many pivots as the story evolved.
Visual Development Artist | House of Cool | 2022
I was the first Vis-Dev artist on this animated feature film to start development on look of picture and environment exploration. The goal was to develop a look for a kind of “Film-Noire / Technicolor Nightmare”. Kitschy elements that are “adorable” by day and absolutely terrifying by night. Color and light are behind it all. It was challenging for me to think about light in this emotional way, but I eventually got the hang of it. Heavily influenced by stage plays, Suspiria and the art of Maurice Noble.
Art Director | Netflix /Jam Filled | 2021
This 10 part mini-series for Netflix took just over a year and a half to produce from script to post. The biggest challenge on this high intensity 3D project was to create and art direct a feature/cinematic world on a TV budget. My team and I came up with design solutions that would balance limited camera moves with strategically layered matte paintings to create the illusion of a world beyond the modelled sets. Working from the inspirational designs of Richie Chavez and Peter de Sève, my team and I focused on showcasing cinematic light and texture on stylized character and set models that would occasionally transition into an exaggerated 2D storybook look for scenes that were a little too grimm for our young audience.
Production Designer / Art Director | Jam Filled Original Short | 2019
I was responsible for creating all concept and production art for this animated short, by Rick Macdonald. Since the content was quite dark and violent, I wanted to create a complimentary look that resembled a cute hallmark Christmas card. I eventually settled on a handcrafted collage look, inspired by Dave Merritt’s print media work. This worked well for the more limited camera moves and animation of the first half of the piece, but needed to be adjusted to something simpler for the action packed and intense fight sequence. I gave the animators some breathing room by going into a grey scale fantasy world that was void of any interactive textures. This short is currently making the rounds in festivals and will be available to share very soon.
Art Designer / Animator | Red bull TV | 2021
I created artwork and animation for a live-action 4 part mini-series with Red Bull TV. The idea was to introduce each episode with an illustrated title graphic that is revealed with a watercolour plume and a slight parallax to add some depth and motion. Each episode has animated maps that introduce the next story location, freeze frame title graphics, and of course, credits.
Vis Dev / Location Designer | Teletoon | 2018
I worked with creator, Joel Mackenzie, on this two part pilot project for Teletoon Quebec. I started with designing a more edgy and textured look during development that I later adapted to a more symmetrical world with rounded corners to better compliment Joel’s characters and visual storytelling style.
Character Designer / Co-Art Director | CBC | 2017
I teamed up with my pal Dave Merritt, to co-art direct this short animated film for CBC. We split our roles between backgrounds, characters, and props. I took care of designing all human characters and props, and over-saw production art on background paint and layout.
Location Designer | Radical Sheep | 2016
Adapting Dave Cooper’s book, “Bagel’s Lucky Hat” to an animated TV production was very enjoyable. I worked to the best of my ability to mimic Dave’s intricate and detailed illustration style, while taking liberties to simplify and streamline where I could.
Location & Prop Designer | Mattel | 2014
My focus on this animated film was to design the Hot Wheels world. The story was about a magic car that went rogue from inside the Hot Wheels facility and left orange track and automotive mutation in its wake. My job was to create what that facility and affected world looked like.
